Petals of Hope Gloria made this award-winning quilt for the "Ply Thy Needle" invitational exhibit sponsored by Fabic Country Classic Cottons. Gloria says: "I slowly made this quilt while I was recovering from back surgery in April 1996. When putting on the binding, I learned my disk had re-reputured. I had a second surgery in August. Thus the quote I selected for the quilt became even more appropriate: 'The miserable have no other medicine / But only hope.' Measure for Measure, William Shakespeare." |

Kaleidoscope Carolyn began this quilt while attending a seminar with Paula Nadelstern at Asilomar in March 1997. Carolyn says: "This is only a single block, but what a block! After spending a week with Paula Nadelstern, this block was magically formed. After all, Paula says, 'You create the magic!' This single block was quilted and entered into the 1998 Minnesota Quilters Show and Conference in St. Cloud, where it took second place in the Miniature Quilt category." |

Spirit Dancers--Water Beth made this quilt as one of four in her Spirit Dancers series, each devoted to a physical element--earth, air, fire, or water--essential for survival. Beth says: "The figures are from cave drawings in Spain and are thought to represent a dance of life. To me, these images celebrate the joyous feelings we have in our friendships and love relations, without which life, while possible, is without meaning." |

Les Amis Beth made this quilt as the last of eight in her Matriarchal Rituals series, which celebrates cultural events centered on women. Beth says: "This quilt was inspired by a postcard sent from France by a dear friend. I collect hippos, and the hippo in Egyptian mythology is the protector of women. I couldn't complete the Matriarchal Quilt series without a tribute to the hippo." |

Seven for a Secret Linda has been making quilts for over twenty years, is a full-time exhibitor and teacher, and since 1997 has been the National Advisor for patchwork and quilting in the UK. Linda says: "This quilt explores the theme of the large black birds seen in the Staffordshire/Shropshire border country where I live. Whether calling raucously from treetop rookeries, tearing at roadside casualties, or hanging from a farmer's gibbet as a warning to others of their kind, their beauty fascinates me. I wanted to capture that moment when a sudden sound or movement startles them into flight. They take off, all noise, ragged feathers, blue black and sinister." |
